Make summer a blast with BirdSleuth!

Dear Friend,

Are you looking for new, low-cost activities for your camp, nature center, scouting troop, homeschool, or youth program? I hope you’ll consider the BirdSleuth curriculum developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

The first module, BirdSleuth: Most Wanted Birds, contains fun, easy lessons with activities that teach children how to identify birds and collect observations that can be reported to the Cornell Lab and used in scientific studies. The curriculum comes with everything you need to help children make an important connection with nature—perhaps for the first time.

Each flexible, easy-to-use lesson in BirdSleuth is geared toward upper elementary and middle-school students. Youngsters learn how to identify birds and to really appreciate nature’s diversity in their own neighborhoods. Your kids will ask and answer their own questions about birds—true scientific inquiry achieved through engaging activities and a healthy dose of fresh air.

Each module comes with lesson plans, a student journal, a resource DVD, and more. To learn more about BirdSleuth: Most Wanted Birds, or any of the curriculum modules, visit www.BirdSleuth.net or drop me an email. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. I've also attached a PDF flier about BirdSleuth for you.

I hope you’ll use BirdSleuth to create a strong bond between children and nature and perhaps spark a lifelong interest in birds. Happy summer birding!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Fee

Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians Names Chief Executive Officer
Booth Kammann Chief Executive Officer of the new Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians

Koxville, Tennessee (June 1, 2009): Girl Scouts announces the appointment of Booth Kammann as the chief executive officer of the new Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians. The council merges Girl Scouts of Tanasi, Appalachian and Moccasin Bend councils effective October 1, 2009. The new council will serve more than 20,000 girls and 7,000 volunteers from Southwest Virginia to Northwest Georgia.

Kammann is an attorney with the Kaousias Firm in Knoxville, Tennessee. She previously held management positions for a decade at Holrob Commercial Realty LLC, in Knoxville, Tennessee, and is a licensed real estate broker in both Tennessee and Kentucky.

“I am so excited to become part of Girl Scouting at this moment in the movement's great history,” said Kammann. “Our communities, our region and our world face many challenges in a rapidly changing landscape. Girls bring a unique perspective to the concept and purpose of leadership and have a strong desire to make the world a better place. Girl Scouting provides girls with the opportunity to discover and develop skills, to connect with each other and to take action to benefit the world around them.”

Kammann’s community involvements include:
Serving as board president for Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee
Serving on multiple committees for the United Way of Greater Knoxville
Leadership Knoxville class of 2006 member
Nucleus Knoxville member and past president
University of Tennessee College of Law Alumni Advisory Council member
University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Associates class of 2011 member
2007 Inaugural Class of ’40 Under 40’ – Knoxville News Sentinel

The Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians council realignment committee approved Kammann as chief executive officer of the Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians based on the recommendation of a CEO search committee on May 15. She officially begins her position July 1.

“The search committee had a large field of qualified candidates from all over the United States,” said Celeste Huffman Herbert, board chair for the search committee. “Booth was chosen due to her unique experience in management, finance and corporate transitions, as well as non-profit experience. She is committed to the vision of Girl Scouts and helping girls grow strong.”

The three merging councils are currently headquartered in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Johnson City. Knoxville will be central headquarters for the new council. Council staffs have been working together since 2007 to prepare for the merger and are committed to finding the best ways to meet the needs of girls—whether they live in metropolitan or rural areas. The new council will maintain service centers throughout its jurisdiction for the convenience of volunteers and girls.

At the direction of Girl Scouts of the USA, more than 300 Girl Scout councils are realigning into 109 high-capacity councils. These councils will be better positioned to serve communities and create more opportunities for girls through more effective use of resources.
